Is Michael Jackson really dead?

Posted by tiltiblog on June 25, 2009

Tell me Internet!  TMZ says you are.

Am I jaded for thinking that this could be elaborate hoax?

How could Farrah and Michael die on the same day?   Incidentally, I heard an NPR obit on Farrah this morning that made me really sad.   It painted a less-than glamourous picture of her acting roles and for my money, she’ll always have glamour.   Or at least the allure of one of the most iconic pin-up pics of all time.   Plus a pleasant splash of crazy.

As for Michael, I don’t know what to say–it’s so hard to believe that someone whose life was so surreal and baroque would be constrained by something as pedestrian as heart-disease.

May all those kooky, crazy, famous and just plain old normal folks who passed out this realm today Rest In Peace.

Heart-stopping Business

Posted by tiltiblog on June 18, 2009

Entrepreneur Magazine, of all publications, has a piece on The Heart Attack Grill –a place famously covered by yrs truly in my tireless effort to bring you the best in meat-related matters (see: Burger Bypass Roundup).   Anywhatsit, it seems HAG owner Jon Basso (pseudonym?  porn name?) has ZERO advertising budget.  Probably thanks to clowns like me who can’t help but write about giant stacks of cheese-laden meat patties served by “sexy nurse outfit”-clad coeds.

His entire business is a set-up to a “that’s what she said,” joke.   And sounds like he’s laughing all the way to the ER…er, bank.

The best thing is the Google result for the business which proclaims:  HEART ATTACK GRILL DIET CENTER.

As a wise man once said, AMERICA…F**K YEAH!

Web 2.0

Posted by tiltiblog on June 11, 2009

Today I heard something about ‘web 2.0′ being the millionth word to officially enter the English language.  And this seemed interesting.  Maybe because, holy crap, our language has a million words!  Maybe because, how could you possibly explain this inane term to English speakers of even 50 years ago?  Maybe it made me wonder how low the bar IS exactly for an interested word to be considered for this honor?  Perhaps it just filled me with vague unease?

I was going to note all of this and not even fact-check the stat itself but then I felt that would be vaguely shoddy, even though shoddy, so-called citizen journalism (sigh, air-quote, sigh) is my favorite cornerstone of the Web 2.0 reality.  Blogs, my friends.  So…2005.  Anyhoosal, all this to say that after some googling I found my favorite headline for this linguistic event and it is:

Web 2.0 Becomes One Millionth Word; Just As We Stop Using It

That about sums up my conflicting feelings.  Thanks, Adam!

And lest you think clicking that link will just reveal pure snark, his case seems to be primarily that what was Web 2.0 a few years ago is now just…the Internet.

And today, you know you love it.

Faced

Posted by tiltiblog on June 11, 2009

I was so excited when I saw this NYT article about the inspiring effect our President has had among the hobbyist-painters among us.  I was excited because I thought I had ‘scooped’ the New York Times like I did with Jon Stewart re: various Bacony products.

But you know what they say about delicious pride: as it turns out, I never posted that post that I composed (ahem, in my head, evidently) about the BadPaintingsOfBarackObama.com website.  Somehow, that just didn’t happen.

So, you win, Times…you rag of the media elite.  You faced me this time.
