Hey do you know when/where/what/how/why something is something-something?
Why no.
But allow me.

Tilti has been on vacation and what better way to come back swinging than to post for Blog Action Day (under the wire though it may be). I’m here to tell you the Good News: the Internet is going to save the planet! Sure, author Karl Burkhart blogged this in the form of a question last year but I’m hopeful. Read to decide for yourself if ‘perception tech’ is the next wave.
Perhaps the more timely question for some of us in the tech realm, since the economy tanked after Burkhart’s Dec 2008 post, is the question of whether there is money to be made leveraging the Internet to address climate change? According to this CNN article, technology to measure and address greenhouse gas emissions is an emerging market. The Microsofties are working to help cities measure GHG with the launch of Project Two Degrees, a collaboration with the Clinton Climate Initiative. The Clinton Climate Initiative is a prong of Bill’s William J. Clinton Foundation.
Here’s another article that outlines in broad strokes why the Internet has already begun to help fight climate change and many of Mr. Singh’s points come back to something I’ve been ranting about for years now: the Internet makes it possbile for people to WORK REMOTELY. So let us, Employers! Especially with H1N1 underway and regular flu season approaching, we should use the tools we have to contain disease and let people work at home in their jammies if possible (and for many knowledge workers, this is a doable arrangement).
What about the Internet as environmental enemy? What about server farms requiring AC and the watts we waste twittering ourselves into oblivion? I found that this not-new list of green computing best practices from Verdant Computing is still very useful. Particularly the prohibition against Keeping Up With the Joneses, never a green activity, unless your next door neigbors are obsessed with having no carbon footprint.
While asking the Internet to Save the Planet may be dramatic, I do think there are many ways the Internet can help us to help ourselves. But we will still have to change some of our perceptions and habits. I will be practicing turning my computer off by going unwired at least once a week. What will you do?
Happy Blog Action Day!

I’m going to take a time-out from my cognitive dissonance surrounding our recent election (Our global husband**, my Barack President!! My fellow Californians voting to ban gay marriage?!?) to talk about a delicious discovery: Tiki Bar TV.
It all started when my faithful servant Dr. 007 (a.k.a. Agent W) recently journeyed from our nation’s capital to my coastal location for a conference. Minus one trip north so that the good doctor could meet a redwood tree or two, we spent the bulk of his visit worshiping the Internet. In all its glory. Even at a friend’s after dinner. Even remotely…it was rather…sick.
That being said, we traded favorites and it was great fun! I now have been blessed with the glory that is the video podcast Tiki Bar TV, starring bartender Johnny Johnny, the lovely Lala and of course, Dr. Tiki himself. This show is great in so many ways, but until I go make myself a cocktail, I feel unqualified to sing its praises. Go look at their website!
Ahhhh….that’s better!
These folks are so great they inspired us to follow one of their recipes at 2:30 am (warning: watching this WILL make you festive! Don’t press play before driving or operating heavy machinery). PLUS they are Canadian. I mean, really! You can’t go wrong here.
[I do think that one of Dr. 007's rheumatology patients turned him on to this show. Which is funny. And I also realize I am very, very late to this party. But I am usually late to parties and as long as the party is still rockin' no one seems to mind.]
In this episode, you not only get the requisite booze, dancing and entertaining guest stars, you also get <crickets> and the best of all: a robot…made with automatic science.
**Tilti heard this on the radio today. I mean, my housemate said the same thing after hearing his Tue. speech and here I quote her: ‘He just proposed marriage to the whole world!!’. But I also heard a journalist on NPR today quoting his Russian-born wife as saying the world was looking to Barack to be its ‘husband.’ Must find the audio for this!

OKAY people. I must preface the meat of this post by saying there has been social spoofery aplenty about what the ‘real world’ would be like if it mimicked the Internet. This being my favorite.
[Oh yeah, there's at least a little NSFW on all links today! Unless you're the Boss, beware!]
So there I was, drifting merrily along on my floaty raft of delusion that the Real World and the Internet were separated by at least the occasional firewall. Until yesterday, when I saw this:
I’m a little afraid now.
Because this vid gives some pretty hilarious tributes to the lolcat (plus features terms like ‘meh’ and ‘donkey-f**ker’) I shall end here.
I fought the LOL and the LOL won.
